Camp Atterbury provided combat training for the U.S. Army and served as an internment camp for Italian and German prisoners. The 83rd “Thunderbolt” Infantry Division trained at Camp Atterbury, as did the 92nd Division, the “Old Hickory” 30th Division and the 106th “Golden Lion” Division. Nearly 275,000 men received their training at Camp Atterbury. And, thousands of other soldiers who received their initial training elsewhere came here for advanced training. In addition, the camp had the Wakeman Hospital Center and trained medical personnel and treated an estimated 85,000 patients during the war.
During WWII, athletic style tshirts were available for purchase at the PX and were commonly used in training and athletic situations. PT shirts with a variety of different unit logos are well documented in many WWII photographs.
