In 1917, Camp Dix was established. It was renamed to Fort Dix in 1939. During WWII the post was an induction center and training installation. Ten divisions and many smaller units were stationed at Fort Dix prior to entering the battlefields of World War II. After the war, the post became a separation center for some 1.2 million soldiers returning to civilian life.
