Cracker Jacks were first produced in 1896.  At the time, the word crackerjack was  slang for outstanding or excellent. This box is the prewar style and predates Sailor Jack. The boy and his dog were introduced in 1916 and added to the package soon after. Prizes would not appear until 1918.

The relationship between the candy and the sailor boy? Cracker Jack is also the name of the navy uniform that the boy wears.
