Our WWII 3 Slogan Pencil set contains 3 pencils with popular propaganda phrases from the war: Keep ’em Flying, Remember Pearl Harbor, and Buy War Bonds.
One of our customers sent us an image of this original WWIl wrapper containing three slogan pencils. We were excited to find a source for traditional pencils and were able to reproduce it.
Prior to the popularity of ballpoint pen, pencils were more frequently used in the 1940s than they are today. Pencils were inexpensive, required little maintenance, could write at odd angles and, most importantly, weren’t prone to leaking. In the 1940s, pencils appeared in a variety of colors – usually red, white, blue, green, and yellow – and were frequently stamped with slogans and advertisements. They were used as giveaways in the same way that ballpoint pens are handed out today. Because pens were expensive, pencils were also often used in place of pens in WWII-era stationary sets.
