This WWII 517 Parachute Infantry Paratrooper T Shirt is a reproduction from an original WWII U. S. Army Airborne PT shirt.
The 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team (PRCT) was formed in March 1943, training in Camp Toccoa Georgia. The 517th was attached to the 17th Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division and later the 13th Airborne Division. The 517th saw most of its combat in Italy, southern France and the Battle of the Bulge, as an independent unit. During its lifetime, the 517th PRCT earned one Medal of Honor, 6 Distinguished Service Crossed, 5 Legion of Merits, 131 Silver Stars, 631 Bronze Stars, 2 Air Medals, 4 Soldiers Medals, 17 French Croix De Guerre and 1576 Purple Hearts. At the end of the war, the 517th was assigned to Fort Bragg, Georgia, where it was inactivated in February of 1946.
The shirt says “517 Parachute Infantry”. During WWII, athletic style t shirts were available for purchase at the PX and were commonly used in training and athletic situations. PT shirts with a variety of different unit logos are well documented in many WWII photographs.
