Our WWII Avenger Field Texas T-shirt was pieced together from a handful of admittedly blurry yearbook photos. There are photos of the shirt being worn by both male instructors and female WASP trainees. These shirts only appear to have been worn in Sweetwater.
While the WAFS were immediately stationed in New Castle, Delaware, Jackie Cochran helped to establish the WFTTD, or women’s flying training detachment. The WFTTD was to train incoming women pilots. The length of training at Avenger Field varied, partly due to a lack of placement opportunities once the pilots graduated from the experimental program.
Once a WASP trainee – or cadet – graduated from training at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, she became a full-fledged WASP with wings. One the female fliers graduated and became a member of the WASP, she would have been stationed at any number of AAF bases.

During WWII, athletic style tshirts were available for purchase at the PX and were commonly used in training and athletic situations. PT shirts with a variety of different unit logos are well documented in many WWII photographs.
