Camp Barkeley was activated on February 15, 1941 as an infantry division training post. The Forty-fifth Infantry Division was the first unit at Camp Barkeley. Other units at the Camp were the Ninetieth Infantry Division and the Eleventh and Twelfth Armored divisions. The Medical Administrative Officer Candidate Schoo was established in May 1942 and 12,500 candidates graduated. The camp also was prisoner of war camp for approximately 900 German Prisoners of War.
