Camp Mackall was the center of training for glider pilots and the site of early experiments in glider techniques. Camp Mackall was the headquarters for General Chapman, the commanding general of Airborne Command, as well as the home of the 11th Airborne Division, the 17th Airborne Division and the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, only combat unit of paratroopers composed of African Americans.
