The U.S. Chemical Warfare Service (CWS) was founded during WWI. The Chemical Warfare Service deployed and prepared gas weapons for the war, that were never used in combat. The CWS also produced incendiaries for flame throwers, flame tanks, smoke generation missions and the 4.2 inch chemical mortar used by Chemical mortar battalions. In 1946, the CWS’s name was changed to the Chemical Corps.
