Both vanilla and chocolate caramels were approved for use in WW2 K-rations. In addition, the chocolate caramel box is used in the USAAF’s E-3 Emergency Sustenance Kits.
The October 1943 K-ration specifications outline two acceptable confection candy components, the 2 oz D-ration and Caramels, grained. Interestingly, to create the chocolate caramel, manufacturers were instructed to add chocolate liquor to the standard caramel recipe. This 1943 specification also reflects the shorter confectionary packages that do not extend past the biscuit (cracker) portion so that they don’t poke through the cellophane bag.
Our second picture shows how Kraft caramels would fit in the box, if you wish to add them
