The New Castle Army Air Base was opened in May 1943. The 552nd Army Air Base Unit was in charge of the base. The 2nd Ferrying Group was assigned to New Castle. The primary mission of the base was to facilitate the movement of aircraft overseas for delivery to the British and other Allies.
Nancy Love’s WAFS were primarily stationed at New Castle, serving as test and ferry pilots as well as towing targets for student gunners. When the unit merged with the WASPs, it was one of the largest concentrations of women pilots on a single base other than Avenger Field.
