Description

This WWII Third Army Mug is a 6oz. high-quality ceramic mug or tea cup and is suitable for morning coffee or as a shaving mug.  Modeled after an original saucer in our collection, the Third Army’s insignia appears on a white ceramic mug, which makes a notable impression while using or in a display.

Based on its back stamp markings, we believe that our original is of the WWII era. However, military china remained relatively unchanged from WWI through post-WWII occupation.

During production, our mug factory dubbed this the Captain America mug, due to its resemblance to Captain America’s shield.  While it’s debatable if Captain America’s iconic round shield was based on the Third Army patch, Captain America’s creator, artist Jack Kirby served with the Third Army under Patton during WWII.

The Third Army marched into Germany on November 17, 1918 with the order to disarm and disband German forces. They remained in Germany through July 2, 1919.  The unit was reactivated in 1932, but its ranks remained relatively small until the mobilization of troops in preparation for WWII.  General George S. Patton was put in command of the Third Army in 1944, when the army gained a reputation for the breakneck speed at which it marched through Paris and into Germany, with many speculating that the war would be over by Christmas, 1944. Only supply and logistic issues slowed Patton’s juggernaut across Europe. While Third Army was consolidating forces, however, Germany attacked back at the Battle of the Bulge. After a victory at the Battle of the Bulge, Patton turned his troops eastward towards Austria. Patton’s Third Army was stationed in Germany during the occupation and was finally recalled to the US in 1947.

From 1947 to 1974, Third Army returned to its prewar duties as a command and training force for stateside units.
